Case Study: Reviving Barkat Colony Park, Udaipur — A Community-Led Urban Ecology Project by Pukaar Eco Services
Participated changemakers
Project Overview
Barkat Colony Park, situated in the heart of Udaipur, Rajasthan, was once a barren, underutilized public space plagued by soil erosion, water runoff, and lack of green cover. Recognizing the urgent need for urban ecological restoration, Pukaar Eco Services, led by Bhuvnesh Ojha, initiated a community-driven project to transform this neglected land into a thriving urban green space aligned with global sustainability goals.
This project exemplifies how small-scale urban interventions can contribute to larger environmental goals such as SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by enhancing urban ecosystems, improving microclimates, and fostering community stewardship.ere...

Project Vision & Goals
Rejuvenate a degraded urban park into a vibrant green lung space for the community.
Enhance urban biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Promote rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge to combat urban water scarcity.
Foster community ownership of green spaces through participatory design and maintenance.
Contribute to climate resilience and urban cooling, addressing the Urban Heat Island effect.
Align with Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for environmental restoration and sustainable urban living.

Design & Implementation Strategy-
Soil Health & Land Regeneration
Carried out soil decompaction and organic enrichment using compost, mulch, and biochar.
Introduced native trees, shrubs, and ground cover species suited for Udaipur’s climate to build a resilient green cover.
Water Conservation & Groundwater Recharge
Developed micro-catchments and percolation pits to manage rainwater and reduce surface runoff.
Designed planting berms to support moisture retention and improve soil structure.
Biodiversity Enhancement & Urban Ecology
Created microhabitats (stone piles, bird baths, native flowering zones) to support pollinators and urban wildlife.
Focused on planting a diversity of indigenous species to increase ecological resilience and habitat variety.
Community Participation & Environmental Stewardship
Conducted community plantation drives, eco-awareness sessions, and hands-on workshops.
Empowered local residents and youth groups to become active guardians of the green space.
